Not everything we write has to aim for ground-breaking scientific contributions. Some articles also allow us to have a little fun with our everyday interests.
📚 Those who know me know that I am an avid reader of science fiction, fantasy, and techno-thrillers, and that Michael Crichton is one of the authors whose work I particularly enjoy. 🦖
🔬 Research meets science fiction : “Grand Challenges, Innovation, Technofear, and Technosolutionism in the Works of Michael Crichton,” brings these interests into my academic work. (https://lnkd.in/eS9bqryJ)
It draws on Ferraro, Etzion, and Gehman’s approach to grand challenges through complexity, uncertainty, and evaluativity (“Tackling Grand Challenges Pragmatically: Robust Action Revisited,” Organization Studies, 2015).
📖 It then uses narrative analysis to examine how several of Crichton’s novels portray technofear and technosolutionism, not simply as opposites, but as responses that can coexist and generate one another.
💡 More broadly, the article considers fiction as a useful resource for reflecting on innovation, technological uncertainty, and possible futures. 🔮
